[Always] Taking Notes from Nana

My Nana at Joy's Noodles (back porch!) in June

So this post is a little bit about family, a little bit about longevity, and a little bit of "Oh, I can do that!" All of which is inspired by my mom's mother. My grandmother. This is her official introduction: We call her 'Nana,' but her given name is Nina - Janina, to be exact. Lot's of 'Ns' .... There will be quite a bit of lavender chat, too.

I was able to spend the long Labor Day weekend with this Nana of mine, and it was so nice. I was just, taken care of. ::sigh:: But that's not what this post is about!

A few weeks ago, Nana sent me a very thoughtful (always) birthday package (see pic to the right) that included a 100-year-old card my great great aunt gave my Nana, a sweet note, and an organza sachet filled with dried lavender and a little beaded bracelet.

Those of you I know well know my Nana is a very special person in my life. I'll save the reasons why for a later post. She didn't know it, but I had been drying a bouquet of lavender and was wondering what I might do with it. So when I opened my package at my kitchen counter, I just shook my head, smiling.

She knows me like that.

So here's my attempt at lavender potpourri ( /ˌp pʊˈr/ is a mixture of dried, naturally fragrant plant material, used to provide a gentle natural scent inside buildings, most commonly in residential settings)

I plucked the buds off - most pretty much fell off.

Et wa-la! A couple scoops went into each of these organza sachets
(I found a 12-pack for $9.99 at Michael's)

Repurposing is one of the best feelings, right? And there are so many reasons to love lavender - its calming aroma (aids in falling asleep), color (purple has always been my fave), freshness - I'm delighted to be able to literally tie it up in a bow. You can put 'em in your linen closets and drawers (lavender's scent wards off moths - just an fyi), hang 'em on doorknobs, give 'em as gifts... you get it.

So besides repurposing, what has all this lavender business taught me?

It is one herb that lasts!
I really do love lacy, lovely, and vintage.

But it also got me thinking about these words:
  • Longevity
  • Tradition
  • Preservation
  • Simplicity
My thoughts cannot be tied up in a bow. But my Nana certainly helps me to appreciate the present and the past.

Alright. Hope you all have a fabulous and relaxing weekend.
